Ryan Gordon is the 1st qualified football coach in the world with MSc Hons Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology degree following a BSc Hons in Sport and Exercise science gained from the University of East London
A UEFA A-prep coach with over 20+ years coaching and recruitment experience in grassroots, academy, semi-professional and professional football, Ryan recognises that it’s not just mastering how to win the game of football, it’s how well you connect with the heart beating players and coaches you’re trying to help and communicate your understanding to them.
Ryan is widely known for his empowering and inspiring coaching and speaking engagements in football. He travels regularly to Europe, Canada and the United States and in addition to his extensive coaching and recruitment experience in football; Ryan is a trained positive psychology coach, emotional intelligence practitioner and NLP Coach-in-training working in football, football education and football business.
He travelled to Europe and understood the development of European players at first hand from kids to current professionals completing study visits to clubs such as FC Barcelona, Valencia, Inter-Milan, Le Havre and FC Twente. Having decided to leave Arsenal academy after 7 successful years and forge his path in football, he was asked to become first team assistant coach and reserve team manager at AFC Wimbledon, a role that he accepted. After a successful time with AFC Wimbledon, five players from his reserve team earned first team contracts with players also playing in the football league.
Moving on, he was asked to be Head of Academy Recruitment and Head development coach of Barnet FC in their new academy. Barnet FC didn’t have any players and it was his role to embed a recruitment programme, a challenge he relished. In 2 years 9 players earned scholarships and professional contracts, 2 players moved to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively with one being sold for £350,000 and the other a nominal fee paid. Ryan joined Luton Town before moving onto Norwich City FC leading their successful North East London recruitment and coaching program.
2 players who were identified and coached by Ryan have recently been transferred to championship clubs for a combined fee of £5.5million.
Combining study and work Ryan set up his own company called ‘Through The Thirds,’ a coaching and recruitment consultancy company that seeks to improve the culture, well-being and performance of players and staff on and off the football pitch. He knows that in his role as Head of Football at the University of East London, he is well equipped to drive the UEL football programme to the next level. He has huge goals and is very excited and looking forward to the next chapter in the NLS Academy project.
